What about me can help you?
My experience puts me in a great position to help non-profits. Because of my varied communications background, I can be a resource to help you see your organization as it is currently, then figure out which ‘next steps’ will have the most impact. Organizations, like people, have strengths and weaknesses. Your organization is probably doing a lot of things well. However, you might be baffled about why you can’t seem to get past one or two particular challenges. That’s where I can help you assess where the “holes’ are in your communications and how you can take things to “the next level.” In addition to fresh insights, I can offer practical assistance in many areas. I have experience in news and feature writing, video and audio production, social media, donor relations, on line fundraising campaigns, creating annual communications plans, etc.
A little background. I’m an entrepreneur at heart. But I’ve done my time working in existing organizations too.
After working as a radio news reporter for 7 years out of college, I started my own production company doing on-camera talent and narration, script writing, audio editing, and then video producing and editing. I worked for large, multinational companies such as GlaxoSmithKline and IBM, and a host of smaller non-profits (my personal favorite). I did a stint as Director of Communications at the NC Family Policy Council, then on to be Team Leader of the Creative Team and PR at the Baptist State Convention of NC, all while working my way through my Masters in Communication at NCSU. Whew!
These days, I’m happily back to freelancing but my work is taking on a wider scope. In addition to teaching communications classes at Campbell University and local community colleges, I’m working with local non-profits as a communication coach. This usually involves a contract of 4-6-8 months with a very specific “deliverable” in mind.
Since I don’t have the overhead of agencies, I can work for much less, but I have a whole host of experts I can call on if I need to assemble a team for big challenges.
So come on! Put me to the test. I provide a free assessment for any non-profit leader willing to buy me a cup of coffee! See if I can help your organization get over that hump, shepherd that project into reality, or finally figure out why you’re not making headway on that long-term goal.
Send me an email! Let’s get started!
